Today I’m a happy guy 🙃
I went through a hiring process for role X. The whole thing, and as the only truly qualified candidate they’ve met for it in 6+ months.
Their reply?
“We’re not sure you’re the right fit, but we want to hire you as a consultant to do the exact same work as the job would entail.”
Now that’s what I call a load of 💩 and my 4th offer for consulting this month, as if I were auditioning to be the f**kboy of Oslo tech.
Another week of my job hunt is in the books and, real talk, I’m getting pigeonholed.
By my desired role, where an almost total lack of awareness towards my skill sets and their application persists across the ecosystem. Norway’s still building tech like it’s 1999.
By budgets, where undercapitalized startups are hiring 2-3 people for minimum wage to do the work I could do on my own instead of offering a decent salary to build a strong team.
By culture, where avoidant, disrespectful behavior is wasting time in my process and theirs, and a general lack of urgency pervades an ecosystem moving like a molasses.
By capacity, where the company has the money, at right stage, facing the problems I can solve, but is apparently too busy to hire the person me to do so, which, okay guy.
It is now time to look abroad, as I’ve more or less lost faith in Norway’s ability to produce anything of value in tech. Oil all the way baby!
So then why am I happy? Because I have enough data to pursue a new plan, because I’m not one to try clinging to a sinking ship 🚢
(And because I’m just that kind of person:))
