It’s Sunday — aka time for something beautiful, a book I absolutely adore.
Tell Them of Battles, Kings, and Elephants is a historical novella by contemporary French author Mathias Énard.
Set in the early 16th century, the story imagines an alternate history where the artist Michelangelo accepts an invitation from the Sultan of Constantinople to design a bridge over the Golden Horn.
But this is no history book!
Michelangelo's journey to the Ottoman Empire exposes him to a rich, vibrant world of culture, politics, and religion, far from the rigid (personal, political and sexual) cultures of Renaissance Europe.
The story is told as a series of vignettes that slowly develop a picture of relations and love spun around the tasks and trials of court life.
It’s a dreamscape of a book and easily read on a lazy Sunday 🍂
