I’m at a turning point in my job search and I’m not sure what to do.
What do you think?
There are 2 active opportunities I’m rounding the corner on and a third I’ll learn more about at the end of the month, and a 4th that. All 3 would be absolutely fantastic roles. Importantly, I’ve also already chosen to not pursue 3-4 other opportunities where the product or mission weren’t aligned to my goals.
So, do I begin my outbound at scale using my data set of ICPs?
On the one hand, I’m ready to go, delays from sickness and all. Or do I assess short-term consulting and otherwise focus on what’s in front of me?
For those paying close attention, this is a classic Optimal Stopping Problem. My goal is to maximize the probability of selecting the best option. According to the problem’s framing, I don’t know what roles are on the horizon (the outbound) while I know what I’ve passed on. I sort of do, but moving on…
According to the Optimal Stopping Problem, I should reject approximately the first 37% of opportunities that cross my desk. Without knowing how many are beyond the horizon I can say that, at present, my number of rejections = my number of active opportunities. Assuming that my outbound will result in an equal number (3-4) of compelling opportunities, I’m just about there.
This further assumes that there are around 10 “perfect fits” for me in the Nordics. I can believe that — and due to how great these ones would be.
And despite a job hunt “at scale”, it’s ofc engagement with companies that takes the most time, given my penchant for thorough preparedness.
If you’re wondering — 3/4 of my active engagements are inbound and the 4th was one of only two applications made, so I guess the LinkedIn efforts were worthwhile. 100% of the opportunities declined so far were all inbound.
Therefore, as of writing, I’m inclined to focus on these opportunities and select from among them for my next role.
